I devoted my last day in Napoli to re-visiting a beautiful little town on the Southern Coast of Italy.....Sorrento. So I set off from the hotel to walk to the railway station...a 30 minute journey thru the gates of hell.....(sorry)...not really....but again walking the streets of Napoli is a true journey. One thing for sure...protect your belongings.....A Nikon 5000 camera with zoom lens should not be carried so that it could be removed from your hands by a cute little "gypsy" boy...(today he was playing a little flute and carrying a plastic cup for money)
I will digress one moment to tell you as a child my grandparents would take us to a nearby village for the 4th of July...a festival always attended by the gypsy families. So my grandmother told me to make sure I shut the chickens up and make sure the dog (Jippy) was tied up so he did not get away. I did as I was told....when we came back I found Jippy had hung himself on the back steps when he fell off and could not recover. So gypsy families always leave a bad taste in my mouth!!
Okay...where was I....oh on the way to the Train station.....take a look...
I did need postage stamps today....and as in Spain...Italy also sells postage stamps in Tobacco stores. Why? Only thing that comes to mind is that so many people smoke that is a frequent place for them to buy stamps as well...
One other thing of note in Italy....men seem to just hang out in groups of 4....or more sometimes...but they do not seem to have any purpose other than to hang out...like these guys...
a group with "4"...well these guys are workers...sometimes...
...all of a sudden...."4" nuns showed up....WHAT!!!
Well at least I made it to the train station....
Getting to Sorrento will not be by "train"....well like this anyway....
This journey will be by metro...or as the call it in Italy....Circumvesuviana....a journey of about and hour and 20 minutes.
But I arrive....
the streets are also narrow and contain cool little shops....
and a sign that will point you in about any direction.....
Little delivery trucks for little streets....this is something we could use in the States.
how about this floral truck?
A small wedding party leaving the church.....
...a group of "4" Scottish dressed men on their way....somewhere....
okay....lunch time...and for the first time I decided to photograph my lunch entree.....take a look...oh, by the way...it took a long time to get the salad...and when it arrived I discovered the hard boiled eggs were warm....they had to hard boil them for the salad....how cool is that?
The entree is Scialatielli....the pasta is served with fresh mozzarella and egg plant....the egg plant is cooked into the sauce and is not visible in the entree....oh so good...
okay....a couple more shots from Sorrento.....first a view of how high the village is from the bay....a long way up!!
A view of the harbour with a couple cruise ships in port.....
and a view of the rail station..or Circimvesuviana station....!!!
Well tomorrow I am off to Roma......
