Not only is the view spectacular...but you get a bonus with a copy of the Michelangelo "David" done in bronze...which is prominent in the piazzale.......
Speaking of sculpture....it is seen almost everywhere and in some unique fashion here in Firenze....
In 1944 when the Germans made an advance into Italy....they spared only one bridge across the Arno river....the Ponte Vecchio or "Old Bridge"....it was also threatened in 1966 when the city of Firenze was flooded....water did flow over it and some of the shops lost a fortune in jewelry....the bridge is seen here in the distance....
Firenze is also a city of many beautiful Basilicas....such as the Basicilica di Santa Maria Novellla....
I do not know if it was the light of the day....but in the Piazza San Giovanni...the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore was so eye catching....just behind the church is the Duomo Museum housing the unfinished Pieta by Michelangelo.....but the Cattedrale stole the show for me on this day....
This is known as the Porta Roma....sort of reminds one of the Great Wall in China....
This area was home to Poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning...who is buried here in Firenze. Dostoevsky also wrote many of his works here...and we all know Galileo and his discovery of the planets....by the way...his telescopes can be seen in one of the museums....Oppenheimer built this home for his wife and it remains today...but as a hotel....
This is the home Tchaikovsky frequented here in Firenze...
And our American Consulate building..
Okay....that is a day in itself....tomorrow more of Firenze from the lighter side....food...fashion...fun!!!
