Eating my way thru Buenos Aires

I have walked the city of Buenos Aires for a number of days seeing the various sites...shopping....visiting the unique areas of the city.  I think I averaged about 7 to 8 miles a day mostly on sidewalks that are in dire need of repair and very narrow - always wondering if I would trip and fall in front of a passing bus or auto.  The weather here has been just right....not too hot....not too cold.....just right.  And, without a cloud in the sky every day.

So after almost 10 days here I am ready to talk about the great food that I had while in Buenos Aires.  The food of choice here is steak....steak....and steak.  Each of the restaurants that feature steak (80 to 90%) also have pasta/fries/salad to go with that steak.  No baked potatoes!  One other thing....the portions are huge....ordering a steak is ordering a 'roast' in the States.

My first experience was La Cantina de Hugo in the San Telmo area of Buenos Aires....about 8 blocks from my hotel....first serving are small bowls of olives, beans and salsa.....

salad.....

pasta....

Half a serving of steak (Rump roast for short!!)

The above is an order for one person.....really!

Oh, I forgot that restaurants in Buenos Aires do not open for dinner until 7:30 or 8:00....most diners arrive at 9:30 and later....

The next night....a restaurant recommended by those having been in Buenos Aires before...and well known by the locals....a reservation here is a must.  This is La Cabrera in the Palermo area of Buenos Aires.

Dining at an outside table on a beautiful night...it was a dining delight.  Here are my friends Laz and Steve settling in for the feast.....

Salad...being served up by our waiter.....

Pasta....this time Ravioli........ummm was it ever good.....

Now I become smarter and split a sirloin covered with blue cheese....

Again the little bowls....this time 3 times more....applesauce, salsa, mashed potatoes, olives, beans...etc, etc...etc..

...and tonight we add dessert....for the first time....and then every night thereafter!!!
A chocolate delight....

Strawberries and cream....

....and finally a lollipop of your choice.....served from the lollipop tree at your table.

La Brigada was our next choice....another restaurant in the San Telmo area.  The first experience was made without taking my camera....Reservation not necessary.

It seems most of the decor was devoted to soccer....

there was this infamous sign....PACKERS!!

This time with camera it was not so good....service was poor...forgot some of our order...but here is what the entree looked like....STEAK - yes this is for 2 persons not one - BUT, check the size of these steaks....

Again....I learned my lesson...and I split a steak....

This time...we ordered fries....but did not receive them till after we ate the steak....we ordered Pasta...and never received it.....

Dessert...of course...first up fresh fruit and cream....

A ball of ice cream rolled in chocolate and dipped in whiskey....

Tiramisu...well something had to be Italian!!

Needless to say....if you go there don't take your camera....it seemed to be much better without it!!!!

I saved my favorite for last....so good that we went back a second night.. (with camera both times) and it was fantastic.  I wrote a note or recommendation on TripAdvisor for this restaurant.  French food...and a
great hostess - Alexandra....along with the owner Pasquale.....a reservation is a must at Brasserie Pentanque.....

A good beginning for me is always the salad.....

Entrees here are.....fish, pork, lamb, chateaubriaed and great chicken cordon bleu....Here is the cordon bleu...

White fish....

Lamb chops....

These fantastic Gratin Dauphinois potatoes.....to die for....

Desserts....but of course....sorbet with fresh berries...

Apple pie with cream...

All in all....it was a dining delight here in Buenos Aires....as you can tell from these 4 satisfied customers....left to right....Steve Corona, Joe Pelletier, me and Laz Barriero....

A photo for the day...comes from what was  being cooked on the grill on the street...I had so many choices.  I am including both...I so wanted to try it, but decided against it.

The Blog may be dark for a week or so....I am off to the Galapagos Islands tomorrow and doubt that I will have any WiFi access.  So look for a posting in about a week....with hopefully some great shots of the Galapagos....
